Introduction: Honoring Mothers and God’s Care
Happy Mother’s Day. Today is a special day where we celebrate and honor all mothers and their contributions to our lives. We have a special gift of a carnation for all the mothers, and we want to take a moment to recognize you for the love, sacrifice, and dedication you give every day. Mothers not only give us love and care, they also tackle many challenges daily, often quietly and faithfully.
This morning our message is A Mother’s Guide to God’s Abundance. Today, we’re going to focus on how God supports and provides for mothers with His love and resources. Motherhood can be joyful and fulfilling, but it can also feel overwhelming and demanding. God’s Word reminds us that His care and provision are present in every season of motherhood.
Isaiah 40:11 (ESV) He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.
This verse paints of picture of God as a shepherd. He not only protects, but also provides gentle guidance, especially to those caring for young ones. This verse assures every mother here that they are not alone, God is always with you. He offers guidance, protection and helps you navigate the complexity of motherhood.
Philippians 4:19 (ESV) And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
This tells you that God is aware of your needs, big or small. And He is more than able to meet them through His vast resources. For every mother that is tempted to worry about daily or future needs, this verse is a reminder of God’s commitment to provide for your needs fully and abundantly.
Psalm 127:3 (ESV) Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward.
This verse celebrates children as precious blessings from God. It highlights the role of mothers as caretakers of these treasures. Children are not just part of a family, they are valuable gifts entrusted to mothers by God to help raise for Him.
Today, we’re going to focus on an inspiring story from 2 Kings 4 where we encounter a mother facing severe financial hardship. Her story is a powerful example of how trusting in God’s provision can turn desperate situations into testimonies of abundance and faith. Her journey teaches that when mothers place their trust in God and step out in faith, He reveals His mighty power to provide, turning what seems little into much.
Face Desperation with Faith
2 Kings 4:1 (ESV) Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD, but the creditor has come to take my two children to be his slaves.”
The mother that we’re going to talk about today was the wife of one of the prophets that Elijah and Elisha taught. Her husband who served and feared God had died, leaving his wife as a widow. As a mother, she had two children, sons, still living at home.
In that day and time, it was practically impossible for a widow to support her own family, let only pay off the debts of her husband. So, the creditor who she now owed was planning on taking her children from her to be his slaves, as payment for the debt. Not only would this mother lose her children, but they would also be the ones who could eventually care for her.
This widow, in faith came to the man of God, the prophet Elisha and told him her story. She knew that Elisha walked and talked to God and was looking to him for direction from God. She faced her desperate situation with faith, rather than trying to figure things out on her own.
Choosing Faith Instead of Panic
When you’re in a difficult or even desperate situation as a mother, how do you react. You may be tempted to panic, to worry, to be anxious, to try to figure out a way forward. Unfortunately, sometimes we see prayer as a last resort, and this thinking is behind the phrase, All we can do now is pray.
Pray at any time is good, but prayer should be the first thing to do as a mother when facing difficulty. Although the text does not tell us, I believe that this widow prayed and asked God what to do. I believe God’s answer to her was to go seek the counsel of the prophet Elisha.
Seeking the counsel of another godly person is something we often overlook. God can speak to us directly or He can speak to us through another person. God desires for you as a mother not to face every trial in life alone.
His plan for you is to give you godly friends who can pray with and for you and give you counsel. These friends should include godly mothers who have gone through what you’re facing and can give you guidance. Above all, face desperate situations with faith, believing that God will see you through.
Recognize and Use What You Already Have
2 Kings 4:2 (ESV) And Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me; what have you in the house?” And she said, “Your servant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil.”
Elisha first asks the widow, What shall I do for you. No answer is recorded, because I believe the widow didn’t know what to say. So, Elisha asked her a second question, Tell me, what have you in the house.
The mother must have thought that was a strange question. How could what she had in her little home help with this desperate situation. So, she began her answer, Your servant has nothing in the house.
She couldn’t think of anything she had that would be of any use. Most likely there was no food of any sort left, as all her money was gone. Then, for so reason, she added, except a jar of oil.
That was what Elisha was waiting for, for the mother to recognize she had something to trust God to work through.
2 Kings 4:3-4 (ESV) Then he said, “Go outside, borrow vessels from all your neighbors, empty vessels and not too few. Then go in and shut the door behind yourself and your sons and pour into all these vessels. And when one is full, set it aside.”
I wonder what that mother and her sons told the neighbors about why they were borrowing empty jars. It must have taken courage and faith to obey God’s instructions through Elisha. Elisha didn’t tell her how many jars to borrow, but he said not too few.
In other words, the more the better. Then the mother and her sons were to close the door and begin to pour the oil they had into the empty jars. The prophet told her that the oil would fill a jar and then they should begin filling the next jar.
God was showing the mother how to recognize and use what she already had in order to see a miracle happen.
Offering What Little You Have to God
The principles behind these simple verses have profound meaning for every mother. When you’re facing a desperate situation, God wants you to participate in the coming miracle. God is asking you, what do you have to give to me so that I will work a miracle.
The widow had to give her last jar of oil and humble herself to ask for the empty jars. Are you facing financial difficulties in your family. God’s Word says that as you give some of what little you have to Him, He will multiple it back to you.
What about your time. As you give time to God in private and at church, God will meet your needs. The next principle is hidden in these verses, and it speaks directly to the size of the miracle God wants to bring.
What or who determined the size of the miracle that the mother received. It wasn’t God, and the size of her miracle was determined, as we’ll see, by how many empty jars she borrowed. When God asks you to do something or to give something to Him, do for Him or give to Him as much as you possibly can.
As you obey, you are sowing in the harvest of your miracle. The measure by which you sow, is the measure by which you will reap your miracle.
Receive the Miracle of Abundance
2 Kings 4:5-6 (ESV) So she went from him and shut the door behind herself and her sons. And as she poured they brought the vessels to her. When the vessels were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another.” Then the oil stopped flowing.
The widow obeyed Elisha’s instructions exactly. She poured the oil and her sons brought the vessels to her. Finally, the last vessel borrowed was full and she asked for one more, but there was no more.
At that time the oil stopped flowing, the miracle was over. It was too late to gather more vessels, the oil had stopped flowing. The preparation for the miracle had to be completed before the miracle happened.
The number of vessels borrowed was a measure of her faith.
2 Kings 4:7 (ESV) She came and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on the rest.”
Because of the widows faith, as well as that of her sons, there was an abundance of oil-filled vessels. There was enough oil to pay off all her debts. The payment of debts eliminated the possibility of her sons being sold into slavery.
And there was enough for her and her sons to live on for the future. God had provided a miracle of more than enough for her in her desperate situation. God honored her faith and she received a miracle of abundance.
Living in God’s More Than Enough
God desires to give you as a mother more than enough. He desires to bless you, so that you can be a blessing, both to your family and to others outside your family. Let’s retrace how the widow got to the point of receiving this miracle of abundance.
First of all, she heard from God by seeking the counsel of the godly prophet, Elisha. Next she gave of what little she had as she obeyed God’s instructions. In faith, she and her sons gathered a large number of vessels.
She completed the instructions by pouring the oil until the jars were full. How can you receive a miracle of abundance in your life as a mother. A miracle of abundance does not just have to do with finances, although it may.
You may need a miracle of abundant health or of healthy relationships. You may need a miracle of healthy faith, overcoming worry and anxiety in your life. You may need a miracle of your children walking with God.
Whatever it is that you need, give God what you have and let Him multiply it into your miracle.
Conclusion: Trusting God with What You Have
This short story today is a powerful testimony to the principle what when we bring what little we have to God, He can turn it into abundance. It teaches us that God’s provision is not limited by our resources but is instead defined by His limitless generosity and love. Mothers, take heart from this story and allow it to strengthen your faith.
Like the widow, you may sometimes feel that you have little left to give, whether its energy, time or resources. But remember, God sees your sacrifices and is able to multiply your small sacrifices into great plenty. He invites you to trust Him, to bring your all, even if it feels small and insufficient.
Watch Him work wonders with it. Let this message encourage you to maintain your faith, knowing that God is with you in every challenge. As you continue your daily walk of motherhood, lean on the certainty of God’s unfailing provision.
Thank you, mothers, for everything you do. May you always feel supported and cherished, not only by our church family, but also by God your Father. He watches over every step you take in faith and love.
