Being a Faithful Mother

Pastor Dan Walker, PhD, MDiv
Introduction
Happy Mother’s Day! We’re glad that you can be with us today as we take some time to honor the mothers that God has given each one of us. Although Mother’s Day was first recognized as a holiday in 1914, the concept of honoring our mothers and fathers is a deeply biblical concept that predates any modern celebration.
Deuteronomy 5:16 (NIV) Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you …
That’s the fifth commandment, and in the New Testament Jesus quotes it while Paul notes it as the first commandment with a promise. The promise is both a long life and that things will go well with you as you walk in obedience. Honoring our parents is not optional; it is a pathway God has designed for blessing.
God is the one who created mothers and gave them to us as one of His good gifts. A godly mother’s love is a reflection of God’s love for us, and a godly mother serves as an example and hero for others to emulate. Today we also begin a new message series called Heroes of Faith, where we will be looking at biblical characters who model a life of trusting God.
Hebrews 6:12 (NIV) We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.
God’s Word gives us stories of people of faith to encourage us to become everything God created us to be. Today’s message is entitled Being a Faithful Mother, and we will look at one unnamed mother whose faith in crisis makes her a true hero of faith.
The Bible tells us the stories of many faithful mothers such as Hannah, Ruth, and Mary, women who believed God and received blessing for themselves and their families. A faithful mother is first of all full of faith, believing what God has said without doubt. She believes not only for herself, but also for her husband and her children, trusting God to meet their needs even in times of crisis.
A faithful mother is also faithful in following God throughout her life. She does not abandon her faith when difficulties arise, but continues praying, seeking God, and patiently enduring until God fulfills His promises. Whether your children are small, teenagers, or already grown, God desires to strengthen you in your role as a mother.
Even if you are not a mother, the principles we will see today apply to every man and woman who desires to walk faithfully with God. Every one of us has a mother for whom we can thank God, and if your mother is still alive, today is a good day to express that gratitude. To be a faithful mother, and truly a hero of faith, you must learn to be faithful in crisis, faithful in preparation, and faithful in action.
Be Faithful in Crisis
Our story begins with a severe crisis, and we know nothing about this mother before her hardship appears. Yet through her response, we see that she is a woman of deep faith. Faithfulness in crisis is cultivated by walking with God in times of peace, because seasons of difficulty will surely come into every life.
When crisis arrives, people often ask the question “why,” struggling to understand God’s purposes. Scripture teaches us that our faith is often tested in moments of difficulty, not to destroy it, but to strengthen it. In these moments, God reveals whether our trust in Him is genuine.
2 Kings 4:1 (NIV) The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves."
This woman had been married to a godly man who revered the Lord, and together they had been blessed with two sons. Yet her husband died prematurely, leaving her alone with debt and no means of support. Now she faced the unbearable possibility of losing her children to slavery, a moment that severely tested her faith.
God allows times of crisis to reveal the strength of our faith and to refine it. In moments like these, the question is not whether we will face hardship, but how we will respond when it comes. When our faith is tested, God invites us to seek His help rather than turning away in despair.
2 Kings 4:2 (NIV) Elisha replied to her, "How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?" "Your servant has nothing there at all," she said, "except a little oil."
This mother was running on empty, having exhausted every visible resource except a small amount of oil. Yet God often begins His miracles with what seems insignificant, asking us to trust Him with the little that remains. Even in crisis, God leaves us something to place in His hands.
Choosing to Seek God in Difficulty
When crisis comes, we have two choices. We can pull away from God and other believers, allowing bitterness to take root and cutting ourselves off from the very help we need. Or we can draw closer to God, seeking His help and the support of faithful people around us.
This widow chose to seek God’s help through His prophet, opening the door for a miracle in her life and in the lives of her children. Her decision challenges every mother, and every believer, to turn toward God in moments of fear and uncertainty. God is faithful to respond when His people seek Him in humility and trust.
Be Faithful in Preparation
In times of crisis, we often desire an immediate solution to fall from heaven. However, God typically works through a process that includes preparation on our part. This preparation often requires obedience even when God’s instructions seem insufficient or unreasonable.
2 Kings 4:3–4 (NIV) Elisha said, "Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don't ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side."
God gave the mother specific instructions through the prophet Elisha that required faith and obedience. She was told to gather many empty jars, shut the door behind her, and begin pouring what little oil she had. What God asked her to do may have seemed foolish or embarrassing, yet obedience was the pathway to provision.
If she had despised God’s instructions or dismissed them as unreasonable, this mother would not have experienced God’s miracle. Her willingness to follow God’s word, even when it made little sense, demonstrated her trust in Him. Faithful preparation often precedes powerful provision.
2 Kings 4:5a (NIV) She left him and afterward shut the door behind her and her sons.
This mother now had a decision to make after hearing God’s instructions. She could either doubt and hesitate, or she could prepare herself to receive God’s answer. Despite any fears or unanswered questions, she chose obedience and prepared for God to move.
Remaining Faithful While Waiting
The time of preparation is often the most difficult, because it is the space between the crisis and the answer. During this season, there is often no visible evidence that anything is changing. Yet this is the season where faith is deepened and trust in God is strengthened.
If you are a mother facing difficulty, you may be in this season of preparation right now. God calls you to keep praying, keep seeking, and keep believing even when the answer has not yet come. Faithfulness in preparation positions you to receive what God has promised.
Be Faithful in Action
There comes a moment when faith must move beyond preparation and into action. Faith that remains theoretical never experiences the fullness of God’s power. This mother acted on what God had told her, trusting Him to do what only He could do.
2 Kings 4:5b–6 (NIV) They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. When all the jars were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another one." But he replied, "There is not a jar left." Then the oil stopped flowing.
In faith, the widow began pouring the little oil she had, and it continued flowing until every jar was filled. The miracle continued as long as there were empty jars available. The extent of God’s provision was directly connected to her obedience and preparation.
This moment teaches us that faith-filled action is essential to receiving God’s answer. If she had stopped early or doubted midway, the outcome would have been different. God honored her willingness to act in faith.
2 Kings 4:7 (NIV) She went and told the man of God, and he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left."
God met this mother’s needs completely and abundantly. The oil was enough to pay off her debts and provide for her family’s future. God knew exactly what she needed, and He supplied more than enough.
Acting on God’s Guidance Today
God knows the needs of your family just as clearly as He knew the needs of this widow. Whether the struggle involves finances, health, relationships, or your children, God invites you to trust Him fully. When His guidance becomes clear, obedience must follow.
Even if your children are grown or no longer living at home, you can still speak God’s truth into their lives. Faithful action may involve prayer, difficult conversations, or intentional changes in how you respond. God honors obedience that flows from trust.
Conclusion
This story reminds us of God’s love and care for mothers, especially in seasons of hardship. God calls mothers, and all believers, to be faithful in crisis, faithful in preparation, and faithful in action. He is attentive to every need and faithful to every promise.
Whatever your need today, God desires to meet it. As you live as a faithful mother, trusting God with what you have and obeying His instruction, He will supply more than enough. Faithfulness opens the door for God’s miraculous provision.
