Introduction: Finding Water in the Spiritual Desert

Imagine yourself trudging through a vast, unforgiving expanse of a desert. The sun is beating down and scorching the sand beneath your feet. The horizon tempts with the promise of water that never materializes.

This harsh, arid wilderness mirrors the spiritual dryness man encounter in their lives. A thirst for something more, a search for sustenance in a land devoid of life. Today, I’ve entitled our message Reviving Hearts: The Power of Prayer and Wisdom.

We’re going to explore how turning to God in prayer and engaging in true worship can be like discovering a spring of water in the middle of our deserts. Just as the desert transforms with the infusion of life-giving water, so too can our spiritual lives flourish new with the refreshing presence of God. So, let’s begin this journey today to find our oasis, where every prayer and act of worship brings us closer to the heart of God.

A place where our souls can be revived and our spirits renewed.

Isaiah 43:19 (ESV) Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

This promise from the Lord is declaration that even in our most barren seasons, God is at work to refresh and revitalize our parched souls. God is always doing new things, if you have the eyes to perceive it.

Psalm 63:1 (ESV) O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

David speaks our how our souls thirst and faints for the presence of God in dry and weary places where we have no living water. When we earnestly seek after God, we will find Him and the life-giving water of His Spirit.

Isaiah 35:6-7 (ESV) then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water …

These verses show us what can happen when we immerse ourselves in prayer and worship, allowing God’s living water, His Spirit, to flood our souls. He desires to fill our lips with songs of joy and our feet with dancing for joy.

If you feel like you’re in a desert today with no water in sight, this message is for you. If you’re looking for more joy in your life, this message is for you. If you’re yearning and seeking to know God better, this message is for you.

The desert does not have to be a place of death and desolation. Instead, it can be the backdrop against which the most beautiful story of revival is written. The practices of powerful prayer and spirit-filled worship are the streams that break forth in our wilderness.

They will transform our spiritual deserts into gardens of life and growth in the presence of God. Today is our final Sunday talking about the new core values of our church in our series Spirit Empowered Church. Today, we’re going to talk about our first core value of

Powerful Prayer – Seeking God for Personal, Church, and St Louis Revival

The Lifeline of Powerful Prayer

Prayer is Our Direct Line to God.

Jeremiah 33:3 (ESV) Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.

This is an incredible verse about what prayer is all about. Most people regard prayer as simply asking God for things and hoping that He will give you what you ask for. Prayer at it’s heart is a direct line to God, it is the way that we communicate with God.

Prayer is a two-channel, in which we speak to God and God answers. First of all, the prophet Jeremiah says that when we call to God, He will answer us. Now, the answer may not be what you are asking for, but He will answer.

Secondly, God will tell those who pray to him, great and hidden things that you don’t know about. How incredible prayer, talking to the creator of the universe is.

The Power of United Prayer

Matthew 18:19-20 (ESV) Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

Individual prayer is wonderful, but the next level is the power of united prayer. Jesus explains that the power of prayers of agreement, where two or more believers join together in prayer, agreeing on what they are asking for.

Jesus’ promise is that prayers of agreement will bring the answer from heaven. Why? Because Jesus is present in a special when believers are gathered together in His name. That is why assembling together for prayer is imperative for every believer.

Persistence in Prayer

Luke 18:1 (ESV) And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.

In the following parable, Jesus told the story of a widow who kept asking a judge for justice and didn’t give up until she received her answer. We ought always to pray without losing heart or giving up.

Why? Because if we give up before the answer comes, it will not come. You see, we must persist in prayer until the answer comes.

The Bible teaches that our prayers accumulate in heaven as our faith grows. At the right time, when our faith has been built through persistent prayer, the answer will come. We must persist in prayer.

Living a Lifestyle of Persistent and United Prayer

In the past year throughout the Acts 2 Journey, we have increased the opportunities for you to both grow in prayer and to pray with and for others. Every Sunday morning in our service, we give opportunities for people to be prayed for according to the Scripture. This is an opportunity both for prayers of agreement and for persistence in prayer.

If your answer doesn’t immediately come in the next week, come forward the next Sunday until the answer comes. Many answers are not coming because people with needs are not coming forward for prayer until the answer comes.

Every Life Group that meets has opportunities for prayer. Everyone needs to be involved in a Life Group.

On Tuesday mornings at 6:30am, we have started a weekly time of Revival Prayer. Prayer directed to God bringing revival to ourselves, our church and our city. This is not just for special people, it’s for everyone who desires to see God move in their lives, our church and our city.

I encourage each of you to pray and consider how God would have you grow in powerful prayer.

Spirit-filled Worship – Everyday Life-Changing Encounters with God Through Spiritual Gifts

Experiencing Spirit-filled Worship

Worship in Spirit and Truth

John 4:23-24 (ESV) But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Jesus defines the parameters of Spirit-filled worship, it must be in spirit and truth. Worship in Spirit is not about the external specifics of where we worship or any rituals that we perform. Worship in spirit is worship through the Holy Spirit that engages our heart’s posture toward God.

Worship in truth means to worship according to the truth of God as revealed in Scripture. Worshipping in truth acknowledges who God is and aligns with His nature and commands. Worshipping in Spirit and truth springs from living in obedience to God’s Word.

God is seeking people who worship in spirit and truth, which is the only authentic worship.

The Role of Spiritual Gifts in Worship

1 Corinthians 14:26 (ESV) What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.

Worship can be individual or corporate, both are essential. This verse speaks of corporate worship when the whole church or a group of the church worships. Biblical worship is not just watching and listening to a worship team play or a pastor preach. Biblical worship is where each one, each person has something to contribute.

You may sing, you may pray, you may have a prophetic word, a message in tongues or an interpretation of tongues. The point is that everyone has a gift to bring to our corporate worship. Worship is never intended to be a spectator gathering, but each one should be involved.

1 Corinthians lists many other spiritual gifts that can be used in a worship gathering. Gifts such as discerning of spirits, healing, words of knowledge, words of wisdom, miracles and gifts of faith. We are to earnestly desire and seek after these gifts, not for ourselves, but so that we can be used in them to bless others as we gather together.

Encouraging One Another Through Active Worship

Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV) And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all

the more as you see the Day drawing near.

These verses in particular instruct us to not to come to public worship just for ourselves. We are to come to stir up or encourage others to love and good works. We are not to neglect meeting together and we are to encourage others to not miss our services.

Coming to Worship for the Benefit of Others

Many people come to church with the purpose of getting something out of it for themselves. They come asking the question, will I like the music, will I like the message, will I like the other people and so on. Those are the wrong questions to ask, selfish questions actually.

Better questions to ask are: how can I encourage someone else, who can I pray for, what gift would God have me use today for someone else’ benefit, how can my worship be more pleasing to God?

As we grow in seeking to help others, guess what? Others will begin helping us. It’s the principle of sowing and reaping. As we sow love and encouragement, we will reap love and encouragement from others and from the Lord.

Conclusion: Carrying the Living Water Into Our Daily Deserts

As we prepare to leave this spiritual oasis at church and step back into the deserts of our daily lives, let us carry with us the refreshing waters of powerful prayer and spirit-filled worship. You see these two core values are not just meant for our gatherings as a church family. These core values are to be lived out in the deserts of our daily lives, bringing the living water of the Spirit to those around us.

Eric gave us a God Story this morning about creating a worship music experience that would prepare the hearts of everyone coming to church for prayer and worship. He is also working on increasing the quality of our online presence, so that people around the world can ministered to by what God is doing at Life Church. Thank you Eric.

Each of us must ask ourselves the question: what am I going to do different in my life, both within our church family and outside in the world. Ask God, how do you want me to grow in powerful prayer and spirit-filled worship. When you pray a prayer according to God’s will like that one, He will answer you.
