Introduction: Discerning Truth in a World Full of Counterfeits

In 1982, tragedy gripped the nation. Seven people in the Chicago area died after taking what they believed was safe, trusted Tylenol. But unknown to them, someone had slipped cyanide poison into the capsules. The bottles looked normal, the branding was familiar, but the contents inside were deadly.

The very thing that they reached for to bring healing was the thing that brought death. That terrifying event changed the way the world handled medicine. People realized that you can’t trust something just because it looks right on the outside. The same is true spiritually today.

There are five major world religions today, trusted by billions. Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism. The last four do not recognize Jesus as Lord and Savior of the world. The Bible teaches that those religions worship Satan and His demons.

There is no salvation in this life or the next through them. Today in our message, How to Recognize a False Church we’re going to focus on churches that claim to be part of Christianity. There are many church systems today, entire denominations, movements and networks that look like the real Church.

They carry Christian names, use Christian language and the Bible. They offer a version of Jesus, but inside? The gospel has been replaced with something else. A different message, a different authority and a different spirit.

And it’s killing people spiritually. Jesus warned us:

Matthew 7:15 (ESV) "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves."

First of all this is a warning from Jesus to every believer. There are false prophets who look like Jesus’ sheep, followers of Jesus from the outside. But inside, they are ravenous wolves, seeking their own profit and pleasure at the expense of the true sheep.

Paul told the Ephesian elders before he had to leave them:

Acts 20:29–30 (ESV) "I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you... and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them."

Paul warns of false teachers, not attacking the true biblical church from the outside, but from within the church. These men were believers, discipled by Paul, who fell away from Jesus. The twisted things they speak are distortions of what the Bible teaches.

Their motivation is to draw a following of people, disciples to follow them and their false church built on their twisted teachings. All false churches who claim to be Christian use the Bible, but they twist its teachings. Satan used the Bible in a twisted way to tempt Jesus.

Do not comfort yourself that a loved one or friend is going to a false church that uses the Bible to promote twisted teachings. They need to get out as soon as possible. Paul reminded the church at Corinth:

2 Corinthians 11:13–15 (ESV) For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.

False churches are led by false pastors, teachers, prophets, apostles, whatever they call themselves. Notice what they do, they disguise themselves to appear as godly, Bible following believers. Just as Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

They disguise themselves in order to deceive people into believing false teachings. In these few verses, the word disguise is used three times. These false churches disguise themselves purposefully in order to deceive people.

The people that follow them and their false teachings will spend eternity in hell. Today we’re going to talk about have you or those you know been deceived by a false church? Both Carol and myself were raised in false churches, but God brought us and our families out into true biblical churches.

Let me just say that there are far more false churches than true biblical churches. Our mission as believers at Life Church is to reach out to those in false churches, false religions and the unchurched and introduce them to Jesus and His Word. Today, let’s open God’s Word and ask the Holy Spirit to shine light on His truth.

Because eternity for ourselves and our families is too important to be deceived by a counterfeit.

False Churches Appear Spiritual but Deny Christ

2 Peter 2:1 (ESV) But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

In the Old Testament, false prophets arose from within Israel who led people away from God to worship idols. In our age, there are false teachers who secretly bring in false teaching contrary to the Word of God. They even deny Jesus and so reveal that they are no longer true believers.

Oh, they still teach or preach about Jesus, but their Jesus is not the Jesus of the Bible. False churches don’t advertise themselves as dangerous, in fact they make every effort to promote themselves as true biblical churches. Yet their teachings distort the Gospel and the clear teachings of Jesus.

2 Peter 2:2 (ESV) And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.

False churches gain followers because they are attractive, often led by personality-driven leaders. They offer freedom without repentance, a gospel without holiness and salvation by one’s own efforts. But their fruit is compromise and shame brought upon the name of Jesus.

They promote sensuality, sexual compromise of many kinds in the name of love. Disregarding and denying the clear teaching of Jesus.

2 Peter 2:3 (ESV) And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

These false teachers and churches are greedy, whether for money, power or influence. The messages contain falsehood designed to exploit the very people they are supposed to be serving. But God will not be mocked and their destruction is certain.

False churches appear spiritual but deny Christ.

Application: Anchoring Yourself in the True Gospel

Recently I’ve written a blog post on our church website called, The 3 Essential Marks of a Biblical Church. A biblical church is a true church, true to God’s Word, whereas a False Church is an unbiblical church, led by false teachers and pastors. The first biblical and essential mark of a true biblical church is salvation by faith alone.

False churches and false religions all teach that salvation is by doing good works. That teaching is not the Gospel taught by Jesus and denies Him as Savior. So what are the major false churches today that deny the essential mark of salvation by faith in Jesus alone?

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons). Jehovah’s Witnesses. Roman Catholic Church. Universalist or Unitarian Churches. All these are false churches that deny the essential teaching of salvation by faith in Jesus alone, but teach salvation is by good works.

Just because all of these false churches claim to be true Christian churches does not mean they are. If you know someone being deceived and exploited in one of these false churches, begin to pray for them. Pray that God will give you an opportunity to reach out to them.

Invite them to church or to watch our online stream. Offer to study the Bible with them. Be the one to shine light in a place of confusion. God may use you to rescue someone from a lie.

God Knows How to Rescue the Faithful and Judge the False

2 Peter 2:4–6 (ESV) if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell … if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah,,, when he brought a flood upon the world … if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them,

Peter now lists three examples of God’s judgement in history. The first example was of angels who rebelled and were cast into hell. The holy angels who did not rebel are still serving and worshipping God.

The second example was God’s judgement of the violent and depraved world through the flood but rescued Noah and his family. The third example is reigning down fire upon Sodom and Gomorrah for their flagrant homosexuality.

2 Peter 2:7–8 (ESV) ...rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked...

God rescued Lot and his family from the depraved homosexuality of those cities. In the midst of darkness and falsehood, God always has a godly remnant that worship Him alone.

2 Peter 2:9–10a (ESV) then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly... and keep the unrighteous under punishment...

Jesus warned us that false churches and false teaching will increase as His coming draws near. But we need not fear, for God has given us His Word and His Holy Spirit to discern what is true and false teaching, what is a true church and a false church.

God knows how to rescue the faithful and judge the false.

Application: Remaining Faithful When Truth Feels Rare

Don’t lose heart, if you feel like you’re one of the few clinging to truth. If you see others caught in false systems or churches, don’t write them off. Reach out to them, open the Bible together, ask good questions.

Spread God’s truth into their lives, help them understand what is true and what is false. Let’s talk about the second essential mark of a true biblical church. Remember the first essential mark was that of salvation by faith alone.

The second essential mark of a true biblical church is believer’s water baptism. This means that when a person believes in Jesus, then and only then are they water baptized by immersion according to Jesus’ command. The false teaching with regard to baptism is that infants should be baptized.

Infant baptism is nowhere seen in Scripture. The water baptism commanded by Jesus and practiced by the church in Acts was always for a person who had made a conscious decision to believe in Jesus.

The main denominations and false churches that practice infant baptism are Roman Catholic Church, Lutheran Church, Presbyterian Church, Anglican/Episcopal Church, and Methodist Church. In theory the Protestant churches on this list should have embraced salvation by faith alone.

However, when a false church embraces infant baptism from Catholicism, which teaches baptism saves you, the understanding of salvation gets very distorted. Once a false church does not practice the essential mark of believer’s baptism, other false teaching becomes common.

Many of these main-line Protestant denominations are now endorsing progressive theology that openly contradicts Scripture. They affirm same-sex marriage, ordain practicing homosexual clergy, minimize the authority of God's Word, support abortion under the banner of reproductive rights, and promote a gospel of social justice over personal repentance and salvation through Jesus Christ.

This is not ok, these are false churches. Our mission is to reach out to them and bring them into a true biblical church like ours. God desires to use us to rescue those caught in false churches.

God knows how to rescue the faithful and judge the false.

False Churches Promise Freedom but Enslave Souls

2 Peter 2:17–18 (ESV) These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error.

False churches may look great, have lots of people, the latest of everything, but they are waterless springs. Jesus said that he came that His followers would be filled with the Holy Spirit as rivers of living water. These churches are full of darkness, boasting and appealing to sensual passions.

2 Peter 2:19 (ESV) They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption...

False churches define grace as permission to sin, it will all be forgiven. But what they call freedom is actually bondage.

2 Peter 2:20 (ESV) For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

When people escape the world, only to be dragged into false religions, their condition is worse. False churches don’t just delay growth, they destroy faith. You see the Greek word for knowledge in this verse means true saving knowledge, they were saved.

False teachers are often people who were saved, but became ensnared by Satan. He uses them to build false churches that pull other people away from Jesus. False churches promise freedom but enslave souls.

Application: Embracing the Full Work of the Holy Spirit

The third essential mark of a true biblical church is Spirit baptism. Jesus Himself was baptized in the Holy Spirit. He instructed all his followers to pray and ask to be Spirit baptized so that rivers of living water might flow from their inner being.

We see in the book of Acts that those who were Spirit baptized always spoke in tongues. Speaking in tongues is praying in a language you don’t know through the Holy Spirit. This kind of prayer through the Spirit is a perfect prayer that will always be answered.

When a person is Sprit baptized, they can also begin to function in spiritual gifts. Jesus said the Spirit baptism gives believers the power to be His witnesses. Spirit baptism is for every believer and for every true biblical church.

So, let’s talk about two last denominations. First is the Baptists, my father was a Baptist pastor until he was Spirit baptized. Then he was expelled from the Baptist denomination.

You see the Baptists believe in salvation by faith alone and in believer’s baptism, the first two essential marks of a true church. However, they are cessationists, which means they believe that the power of the Holy Spirit and the supernatural gifts of the Spirit as taught in the Bible are not for today, they have ceased.

There is zero biblical support for the belief of cessationism, it is a false teaching by a false church. Can a person be in a false church and be saved? Yes, they can if they believe in Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

However, by not obeying Jesus in the other essential marks, they are at best missing out on God’s blessings and at worst susceptible to falling away. That leaves one last denomination, the largest by far Protestant denomination in the world, the Assemblies of God, now close to 90 million believers across the world.

Life Church St Louis is part of the Assemblies of God and our Fundamental doctrines strongly affirm all three essential marks of a biblical true church. That is why we must speak up for our friends, relatives, neighbors and workmates caught up in false churches or even no church at all.

Truth matters, Don’t let emotion or loyalty keep you silent when someone is in a false church that is leading them away from everything that Jesus has for them. Reach out, pray, share God’s truth with them.

Offer an invitation out of deception into grace here at Life Church. The cost of silence is too high. You can access my in-depth blog post on the 3 essential marks of a biblical church at LCSTL.ORG/3marks.

Conclusion: Choosing Truth Over Comfort

We began with a tragic story, bottles that looked like medicine but were filled with poison. No one questioned the label, no one expected danger. But what was meant for healing ended up bringing death.

And the same is happening spiritually today. There are church systems today, entire denominations and networks that carry the appearance of truth. They use the name of Jesus, but they deny His Lordship and His clear commands.

They preach freedom and love but lead people into sin. And most people believe the varieties of churches are simply like flavors of ice cream. Just pick the one you like best, the one closest to your home, the one where your friends are and everything will be OK.

Not realizing that the number of true churches is very low compared to false churches. Not understanding that churches that believe and walk in the three essential marks of a biblical church are few and far between. So what do we do? We test everything by the word of God.

We speak up when others are being led astray. We invite people to rediscover the beauty of the true Gospel, the full Gospel. Maybe today you realized that someone you know is caught up in a false church system.

Don’t stay silent, reach out, offer to read the Bible with them. Share your testimony, invite them to our church, a true biblical church with roots around the world. You could be the person God uses to rescue someone from deception.

And if you’re listening today from somewhere else and realize you’ve been sitting under false teaching or supporting a system that no longer holds the truth, don’t delay. Step into the light. Follow Jesus fully, Embrace all His commands.

The cost may be high, but the reward is eternal. You were never meant to live on spiritual poison. Jesus offers you the living water of His Spirit.
