Introduction: God Has Come Near and Will Not Leave

May people believe in God but quietly feel on their own. They carry marriage pressures, parenting burdens and financial concerns. They feel as though everything depends on them.

Even as Christians, it’s easy to slip into saying we trust G/od while acting as if He is far away. The good news of Christmas is that God did not stay far away. In Jesus, He stepped into our world, our families and our mess.

Jesus’ name Immanuel means God with us. In Christ, God has come near and He has no intention of leaving. The same presence that came to Joseph and Mary comes to us by the Holy Spirit.

Today our Christmas message is entitled “Never Alone Anymore. Think about a small child walking through a crowded store with their mother. Often, they will reach back without even looking.

They do not ask, “Are you still there?” They simply reach, expecting a hand to be there. When that tiny hand finds the mother’s hand, nothing in the store changes. But everything in the child changes, their heart is at peace because someone strong and loving is with them.

The is what God’s presence does. His presence does not always remove the crowd, but it changes our confidence in the middle of it. For many, Christmas is a noisy and stressful time.

There are schedules, family dynamics and private worries. The message of Christmas is not only that God forgives our sins and offers us heaven one day. The message is that God has come near in Jesus.

He has moved into our world and into our lives. He is not observing from a distance, He is Emmanuel, God with us through the Holy Spirit. Because of Jesus, we need never to be alone anymore.

Let’s look at just a few of God’s promises of His presence with us.

Isaiah 41:10 (ESV) Fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

What takes away fear and worry in our lives? God promises that He is with us, to strengthen us and to help us. He will uphold us with His right hand to keep us from stumbling.

What do we need to do? Simply reach out our hand to His and follow Him.

Psalm 23:4 (ESV) Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

In the deepest seasons of life, we need not fear, because Jesus is with us. He protects and comforts us in the difficult times of life.

In the Old Testament only a few experienced the continued presence of God in their lives. But through Christmas and the birth of the Lord Jesus, the presence of God came into our world as a human being, yet fully God.

Through the Holy Spirit that Jesus poured out, we can have the presence of God with us continually. In Jesus, God has come near us, stays with us, and changes everything around us. As we look to Mathew 1 this morning, we see three powerful ways that God is with us through Jesus.

Trust God When His Way Surprises You

Matthew 1:18 (ESV) Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

Trust God When His Way Surprises You

Matthew 1:19–20 (ESV) And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly, but as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”

An angel had told Mary that she would become pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. This was certainly a surprise to her and now to Joseph.

Joseph was caught in a situation he does not understand. His plans for a quiet, simple life with Mary have been interrupted by an event that makes no sense. God then steps in Joseph’s life through an angel.

The angel first gives Joseph instructions what to do. He is not to divorce Mary, for she has not been unfaithful to him. Rather he is to marry her.

The angel tells Joseph that the baby was conceived from the Holy Spirit. This was something that had never happened before and would never happen again. The child to be born, Jesus, was fully human from Mary and fully God from the Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV) Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

These verses do not promise that we will always understand, often God will surprise us. They promise that God will direct us in the right paths. Trusting God is not pretending we have no questions.

It is choosing to lean on God more than our own logic. In our families, that means we bring our difficulties to the Lord and ask Him to direct us. Rather than trying to fix everything in our own strength and understanding.

Philippians 4:6–7 (ESV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

God’s presence brings peace that is bigger than our understanding. The promise is not that circumstances suddenly become clear. But that His peace will guard our hearts and minds.

A home that draws near to God in prayer will experience a different atmosphere. An atmosphere of peace, rather than of anxiety and worry.

Application: Trust God When Life Throws You a Curve

All of us get hit with surprises, things we didn’t expect from time to time. We rejoice in good surprises, but some surprises aren’t good in our opinion. Those surprises could be something breaking, an argument with someone close to us, a difficulty at work or an unexpected financial situation.

Our first response may be to react, perhaps with thoughts, words or actions that are not pleasing to God. Then we may try to fix everything ourselves without consulting with God. A better way is to put our trust in God, who is never surprised by the events of our lives. Since He has allowed them, He has a way to guide us through them.

If we ask Him for guidance, He will show us the way forward. God wants us to choose to lean on God’s character and promises more than in our ability to figure everything out. Talk openly with your children about the importance of prayer and hearing from God in every situation. Look for ways to bring God into your family decisions through prayer and Scripture.

Even if you don’t see the whole picture. Trust God when His way surprises you.

Receive Jesus as the Savior Who is With You

Matthew 1:21 (ESV) She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.

The angel now reveals to Joseph who the child will be. His name will be Jesus, which means “The Lord saves.” Jesus will save his people from their sins.

The greatest problem in our lives is not outside of us. It is inside of us, our sin. That sin without forgiveness will send us to an eternity in hell, apart from God.

Jesus came to deal with our real problem of sin. He could only deal with our sin by becoming a human like us but living a perfect life without sin. Jesus cane to bring His presence and His salvation to every who believes in Him.

John 1:29 (ESV) The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

Jesus came on a mission to this world following a plan in place from before creation. Jesus had no sin of his own and gave himself up to die on the cross. He paid our penalty of death for sin, making a way for us to be forgiven and saved.

In the old testament, a lamp was sacrificed to save from the death angel. Jesus came as that perfect lamb who brings forgiveness to everyone who repents of their sin and believes in Jesus. Christmas and the cross are intimately connected.

In Jesus, God stepped into our world to free us of our guilt and shame. So, that we could experience His presence, not just in this life but for eternity.

1 Timothy 1:15 (ESV) The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

Jesus came into the world on a rescue mission, carrying out the only plan possible to save us. No one is good enough to get to heaven and have God’s presence in their lives. Why? Because everyone has sinned, everyone is a sinner.

And even one sin will keep you out of heaven in eternity and out of God’s presence in this life. Even the great apostle Paul wrote in this verse that he was the foremost of sinners. As saved believers, we do not pretend that we are perfect, but we confess our sins and trust Jesus to forgive us. Receive Jesus as the Savior Who is With You.

Application: Receive and Reflect the Savior’s Grace

At the end of this message, you’ll have an opportunity to pray and receive Jesus as your Savior. Parents and grandparents, as you let your children and grandchildren know that you have received Jesus as Savior, they will follow your example. This Christmas talk in your homes with your children that Jesus came to save us from our sins, not jut to give us a warm story.

Practice confession and forgiveness in your family, reflected the grace we have received in Jesus.

Live Every Day Aware That God is With You

Matthew 1:22–23 (ESV) All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel, which means, God with us.”

Jesus coming to earth on that first Christmas was not a random event. It was the fulfillment of this and many other prophecies spoken centuries earlier. God’s plan has always been to be with His people, Immanuel, God with us.

In Christ, God has stepped into human history in a way that cannot be reversed. Once God has come near in Jesus, He will not go back to being distant.

Hebrews 13:5–6 (ESV) Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not fear, what can man do to me?”

The promise of God’s presence changes how we live day to day. We do not have to cling to money, success, or control for security, because God Himself is with us. Contentment grows when we believe that His presence is enough.

This shapes the priorities and values of a family that trusts God is truly with them.

Romans 8:38–39 (ESV) For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This verse tells us that nothing can separate a believer from the love of God. This wonderful promise only applies to believers. If someone stops believing, they are no longer believers and are separated from the presence and love of God.

But when we open the door of our hearts and let Jesus come in, He protects us from anything that would try to separate us from Him. When fear of the future or anxiety about our children tries to dominate our hearts, we can stand on this promise. A family that believes this begins to speak faith over their days, their children, and their future.

Live every day aware that God is with you.

Application: Practice God’s Presence Daily

When you wake up in the morning, remind yourself that God is with you. When you go to work, when you lay down to sleep at night, remind yourself and your family that God is with them. Make your choices, including financial and time decisions, based on trust in His presence.

Speak God’s promises over your children and grandchildren, especially when you feel anxious about their future. Practice simple habits, like praying together with your family, praying together in your life group. Encourage other believers going through a rough time, that you are praying for them and God is with them. Live every day aware that God is with you.

Conclusion: Reach Back to the God Who Reaches for You

Think back to that child in the crowded store, reaching back for the hand of their parent. ‘The noise doesn’t stop and the crowd doesn’t vanish. But when their hands connect, the child’s fear gives way to peace because someone strong and loving is with them.

Joseph’s world was confusing and uncertain, but God stepped into his fear with a word and promise. A Savior would be born. His name would be Jesus, because He would save His people from their sins. His name would also be Immanuel, because God Himself was coming near.

The same God who stood with Joseph stands with you today. We no longer have to carry our homes, our marriages, our parenting, or our future alone. We are not dependent on our own strength. God has come near in Christ and by His Spirit He present in every home and heart that welcomes Him.

You may still walk through difficulties, pressures, and questions, but you do not walk through them alone. Let this Christmas be more than a memory of a manger. Let it be a fresh awareness that the God of heaven has moved close. He is reaching out His hand again. Our part is simple, to reach back.
