Praying Until the Light Breaks Through

Introduction: Keeping the Prayer Lamp Lit for Lost Loved Ones
Many of us have loved ones who seem far from God. They may be children, grandchildren, spouses, parents, grandparents, other relatives or just close friends. We love these people and desire for them to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. But as years go by, the wait begins to wear us down.
We pray, we hope, we try again. But when nothing seems to change, discouragement creeps in. We forget that the battle for their soul is spiritual. We can’t argue them into the Kingdom or manufacture conviction.
When fatigue replaces faith, prayer quietly fades, and the darkness gains ground. But God hasn’t stopped seeking. His Spirit is still drawing. He invites us to partner with His patient love.
To keep praying when we feel empty. To believe His light can still pierce the hardest heart. Today we begin a short message series called: Partnering with God for the Lost. Off the coast of Maine, an old lighthouse keeper told a reporter he lit his lamp every single night.
No matter the weather, no matter if any ships were expected. When asked if it ever felt pointless, He smiled and said, “My job isn’t to decide who sees the light, my job is to keep it shining. That’s what prayer for lost loved ones is like. Sometimes you can’t tell if its working.
The seas are foggy, the horizon empty. But our role isn’t to control the results, it’s to keep the light burning.
Luke 18:1 (ESV) And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.
Prayer isn’t a momentary act, it’s a lifelong partnership with God’s plan of salvation. Each prayer you pray sends light into the storm. And one day, that light will guide one of your lost loved ones safely home.
Isaiah 62:6–7 (ESV) On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent… you who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem.
The watchmen symbolize intercessors, people who pray for others. They must stay alert to the attacks of the enemy, praying continually. In their prayers they call on God, reminding God of His promises they are trusting in. They take no rest, they are relentless in prayer until God’s kingdom is established around the world.
These verses are a divine call to persistent, faith-filled intercession. Praying without ceasing, partnering with God for the lost. As each loved one is saved, the kingdom of God grows and is established.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 (ESV) Pray without ceasing.
There’s an easy verse to memorize, only three words long. Pray without ceasing. Never give up on the people and visions God has given you. Today’s message is entitled “Praying Until the Light Breaks Through.
Persistent, faith-filled prayer is the believer’s steady light in the storm. Those prayers guide lost loved ones toward the mercy of God. Let’s look at three ways to keep that light burning until breakthrough comes.
Keep Praying When You Feel Weary
Galatians 6:9 (ESV) And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
Prayer is like planting seeds and often times we may grow weary when we do not see quick results. Prayer is hard work. You can’t see who you’re talking to. Usually results take longer than we would like.
There are many distractions that Satan brings to keep us from praying. But if we keep on praying, we will reap a harvest. If we do not give up.
Isaiah 40:31 (ESV) But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
This verse calls us to wait on the Lord. To wait on the Lord is not just passive waiting for an answer to come. Waiting on the Lord in prayer, is actively praying for His will in every situation. As we wait on the Lord in prayer He promises to renew our strength.
We have the strength to fly, to run and walk without quitting.
Colossians 4:2 (ESV) Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.
To be steadfast in prayer is to keep on keeping on despite attacks of all kinds. We talked about this verse a few Sundays ago. Being watchful has to do with spiritual attacks against us and our prayers. Thanksgiving is an important way to solidify our faith.
As we pray for lost loved ones, we give thanks in advance for the answer. We give thanks that God is already working in their lives, even though we can’t see it. Keep praying when you feel weary.
Application: Pray Daily and Refuse to Quit
If you have lost loved ones, you should be praying for them daily. They should be on your Five Friend Focus card. If you don’t have a card yet, take one out of the seat back in front of you. Write down the names of five friends you are praying for to be saved and added to the church.
If you have more to pray for, take two cards and make it your ten friends focus. Write some of these verses down to encourage yourself when you feel weary. The most effective form of prayer is praying in the Spirit, in tongues. Romans 8:26-27 tells us that when a believer prays in the Spirit, the Spirit prays through them a perfect prayer in keeping with God’s will.
A perfect prayer in keeping with God’s will is always answered. We’ll talk more about this at another time. Keep praying when you feel weary.
Build Faith Through God’s Word
Romans 4:20–21 (ESV) No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.
These verses speak of the promise that God gave Abraham and Sarah that they would have a son. Yet, they grew older and older and no son came. But Abraham, did not waver, did not doubt God’s promise, even though it seemed physically impossible. Rather than giving up and growing weary, he grew strong in his faith as the years passed.
He gave glory or thanks to God, believing that God was going to do what He promised. And at the age of 100, the son of promise, Isaac was born. Abraham believed God’s Word, he believed the promise, and it came to pass.
Romans 10:17 (ESV) So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Do you want your faith to grow? Do you struggle with doubts? This verse tells us where faith comes from. Faith comes from hearing God speak.
And we hear God speak through His Word. God can speak His Word to us in several ways. He can and does speak to us as we read, study and pray through the Bible. But He also can speak to us directly through His Spirit or through other people speaking His Word to us.
Psalm 119:50 (ESV) This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.
When we’re going through a tough time, when we grow weary, God’s promises give us life, give us hope. Where should you turn to when you are struggling believing for a lost loved one? Turn to the promises in God’s Word and those He has spoken to you. They will comfort you and give you life.
Build Faith through God’s Word.
Application: Feed Your Faith with Daily Scripture
Reading Scripture daily is your training and faith building ground. Every promise you believe and speak adds oil to your lamp of faith. Find a salvation promise verse or verses and read them every day as you pray. Personalize the verse by adding your loved one’s name in it as you pray.
For example, suppose your love’s one’s name is Andy. John 3:16 (ESV) For God so loved Andy, that he gave his only Son, that when Andy believes in Him Andy will not perish but have eternal life. Pray the verse directly to God. Father you created Andy and love him so much you sent Jesus to die for him.
I ask that you draw Andy to believe in you, so that Andy will not perish but have eternal life. Memorize some of these verses and share them with others in your Life Group. Share stories of answered prayer to strengthen other’s faith. Oftentimes as God works in a loved ones heart, there are small steps they take closer to God before finally submitting their life to Him.
Give thanks for each forward progress they make closer to Jesus. Pray for the light of Jesus to break through into their hearts.
Pray For Spiritual Revelation
2 Corinthians 4:3–4 (ESV) And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
These verses reveal to us what is going on behind the scenes with our lost loved ones. Unbelievers aren’t just uninterested, they’re spiritually blinded. The veil over their minds is not intellectual, it’s spiritual. Satan has blinded their minds from seeing the light of the gospel.
That’s why arguments and pressure can’t change them. Only the Holy Spirit can lift the veil.
Acts 26:17–18 (ESV) …I am sending you to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God.
Paul was sent and each one of us as believers are sent to open people’s eyes through the Holy Spirit. Unbelievers eyes are blinded from seeing the light, they only see darkness. Your lost loved ones are under the power and control of Satan. Once their eyes are opened to the light of Christ, then and only then will they turn to God.
Ephesians 1:17–18 (ESV) That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened.
In these verses, the apostle Paul is praying for the Holy Spirit to open the eyes of people’s hearts so that they can see what God has for them. Our intercessions tear down demonic strongholds and open eyes. When we pray for revelation for our lost loved ones, we’re asking God to show Himself to them in ways they cannot ignore. We’re praying for the Holy Spirit to bring light where the enemy has kept darkness.
Application: Remove the Veil through Intercession
Oftentimes, as a believers, you may find it hard to understand why your lost loved ones can’t see the truth about Jesus. It seems so obvious to you, why can’t they just understand? The answer is found in the verses we’ve just studied. The reason that unbelievers can’t see what you see is that their spiritual eyes are blinded by Satan.
Your weapon for tearing down these spiritual strongholds in your loved ones is prayer. Ask God daily to remove spiritual blindness from your loved one’s heart. Pray that God would protect them from the attacks of Satan in every dimension. Pray that God will preserve their life until they receive Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Pray that God will send laborers across their path to speak truth in love. Use Scripture to declare light and freedom over their life. Thank the Spirit in advance for doing what only He can do. And ask God for wisdom in how you should show God’s love to them in words and actions.
We know that it is God’s will that none should perish. So as you pray for your lost loved ones, believe that God is answering your prayers. Give Him thanks in advance for the day they are saved and come into the kingdom of God. Pray for spiritual revelation.
Conclusion: Keep the Lamp Burning Until Breakthrough
The lighthouse keeper didn’t know which night a ship might appear. But he kept the lamp lit at all times. That’s our calling to keep the light of prayer shining until those we love see the light of Christ. You may not see results right away, but the light is reaching farther than you think.
Keep praying when you feel weary. God will give you strength. Build your faith through God’s Word to encourage your heart and guide your prayers. Pray for spiritual revelation, that the powers of darkness would be defeated.
That the truth about Jesus would enlighten your loved one’s mind. Persistent, faith-filled prayer is your steady light in the storm. Guiding lost loved ones toward the mercy and love of God. And when the day comes that they believe, we all will rejoice together with the angels of heaven.
