Introduction: Learning to Live with Daily Gratitude

Today, we’re going to talk about “Transform Your Life with Thanksgiving.” Thanksgiving is not just for a holiday that happens once a year. Thanksgiving is something that can transform your life on a daily basis. We’re going to talking about embracing daily gratitude in our lives.

Take a look at this picture and tell me what you see. Some may see the glass as half empty, others as half full, which is it? Although both may be logically correct, seeing the glass as half full is the beginning of thankfulness. Our world often focuses on what’s missing and we complain about it.

Let me tell you a secret. Until Jesus returns, none of our glasses is going to be completely full. Only in the new heavens and new earth will that happen. Yet even now, God’s Word tells us the importance of thanksgiving. Seeing our lives, our glasses as half-full, being thankful for God’s blessings.

Ephesians 5:20 (ESV) giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

When are we to give thanks? Always and for everything. We must replace worrying and grumbling about the half-empty glass with thanksgiving for the half-full glass. God calls us to shift our focus from what we lack to what He has already provided. This shift in perspective is foundational to a transformed life.

James 1:17 (ESV) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

Every good thing that you have in your life is a good gift from God. For those good gifts, we are to give thanks. Thanksgiving flows naturally when we recognize God as the source of all that is good. Gratitude keeps our hearts aligned with truth.

Colossians 3:17 (ESV) And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Thanksgiving is not just to be relegated to meals. Everything we do in life should be for Jesus and done with thanksgiving. Gratitude is meant to permeate every part of our lives. So today, we’re going to look further into God’s Word to see how you can transform your life with thanksgiving.

Enter God’s Presence with Thanksgiving

Psalm 100:4 (ESV) Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!

In Bible times, the temple had gates that led into the interior courts. When people were to enter through the temple gates they were to give thanks to God. Thanksgiving is expressing appreciation to God for the things He has done. They were to continue into the temple courts with praise.

Praise is to honor God, to bless Him for who He is. These commands are then repeated, as we are to give thanks and bless His name. The next verse gives us reasons why we should give God our thanks and praise. God always gives us a reason for obedience.

Psalm 100:5 (ESV) For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

We can always give thanks because the Lord is good, He is good all the time. Let’s say this together – the Lord is good. This statement is very simple, but very profound. The Lord is good and everything that He does is good.

His goodness is part of His great love for each of His children. His love is steadfast and it never ends. God is faithful, you can depend on Him. His character, His goodness, His love and His faithfulness continues forever. Because of who the Lord is, we can enter His presence with thanksgiving and praise.

Beginning Each Day Aware of God’s Goodness

When do we enter God’s presence? I would suggest when you wake up in the morning. Do you say, Good Lord, it’s morning or Good morning Lord, thank you for a new day? When you spend time in the morning praying and reading your Bible, you enter His presence.

Is your prayer time filled with all your problems or do you take time for thanksgiving? Not only can we give thanks for what God has done in the past. We can also give thanks for what God is going to do in the future in our lives. Why can we give thanks for things we have not seen yet?

Because God is good all the time and He loves you. All His plans for your tomorrow and the rest of your life are good. You can give God thanks when you come to church, youth group or life group. Having an attitude of thanksgiving is contagious.

Just as having an attitude of grumbling and complaining is contagious. Let’s ask God to give us an attitude of thanksgiving and thank Him in advance for helping us grow in giving thanks. It will transform your life. Thanksgiving changes not only our hearts but also the atmosphere around us.

Find Joy and Peace in Gratitude

1 Thessalonians 5:16 (ESV) Rejoice always,

This is a two word verse, circle the always. When should we rejoice? Always. You might say, Pastor Dan, that’s impossible. Not true. Everything that God commands us to do is possible with His help.

How in the world can we rejoice always? Let’s look at the next 2 verses. God never gives commands without also showing us how to obey them. These verses work together to show us a lifestyle of dependence on God.

1 Thessalonians 5:17–18 (ESV) pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

There are two more commands in these verses. The first is to pray without ceasing, circle “without ceasing.” When should we pray? All the time. The next command says “give thanks in all circumstances.”

Circle the word “all.” You might say, well, how can I do that not all circumstances are good? The command does not say give thanks for all circumstances; it says give thanks in all circumstances. In every circumstance in life, God is still good, you can give thanks to him.

Every circumstance that God allows into your life is ultimately for your good. Even though some circumstances may be painful. These three verses with three commands ends by saying “This is the will of God for you.” The will of God for you is to rejoice always, pray always and give thanks always.

As you grow in obedience to these three commands, you will experience God’s joy and peace in increasing measure. It will transform your life. Obedience opens the door to spiritual stability. Gratitude anchors our hearts in God’s faithfulness.

Cultivating Thankfulness in Daily Life

This morning we are focusing on learning to be thankful. Maybe you have made a prayer request list to remind you to pray for things. That’s good, but how about keeping a thanksgiving list. Things you can thank God for.

How about waking up in the morning and thinking of 3 things that you’re thankful for? As we grow in being thankful to God, it will help us grow in being thankful toward others. Gratitude toward God overflows into gratitude toward people. This practice reshapes how we see life.

It’s human nature to point out the mistakes and flaws in others, sometimes we just think them and sometimes we say them. How about looking for the good things in the people around us and thanking them for them? As we grow in our relationship with God with thanksgiving, it will help us in our relationship with the people around us.

Do you need more joy in your life? Practice prayer and thanksgiving. In fact, rather than looking for joy, ask God to help you obey His command to rejoice all the time. Your life will be transformed as you rejoice, pray and give thanks always.

Trust God’s Provision and Peace

Philippians 4:6 (ESV) do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

What’s the opposite of giving thanks? We see it in this verse which says “do not be anxious about anything.” Circle the word “anything.” Is there anything you can worry about or be anxious about? Nope. Rather than worrying, what should we do.

It says “in everything”, circle everything. We should pray make our requests to God. What do we give thanks for as we pray? We give thanks that God is good and He is going to give us a good answer to our prayer. By faith, we give God thanks for the answer to our prayer before it comes.

What happens when we follow these commands? God never leaves obedience unrewarded. He promises something supernatural when we exchange anxiety for prayer and thanksgiving. The next verse reveals the result of trusting Him.

Philippians 4:7 (ESV) And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This verse says that the peace of God will guard both your heart (your emotions) and your mind (your intellect). What does God’s peace guard you from? It guards you from anxiety, from worry, from any and all attacks of Satan. Notice that the peace of God surpasses all understanding.

God will give you His peace in the midst of difficult circumstances as you trust Him. Others will not be able to understand how you can be at peace. The peace of God will be beyond your understanding and the understanding of others. The verse says that God’s peace will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

As you follow God’s commands, as you exchange anxiety for prayer and thanksgiving, you will enter into the peace of being in Christ Jesus. Jesus is the prince of peace. He desires for you to be at peace no matter what you are going through in life. As you trust God’s provision, you will experience His peace.

Replacing Anxiety with Faith-Filled Thanksgiving

There is an epidemic of anxiety in our world today. This last week, a young man, a friend of my sons, age 23, took his own life. I don’t know the circumstances, but I’m sure that anxiety about the future caused him to lose hope. Such a tragedy.

Anxiety looks to the future and sees trouble, disaster and no hope. God tells us as His children to look to the future and see God’s hand in our future. We make our requests and we give thanks in advance for God to work for good. We remember that God is good, all the time.

God has a good plan for your life and He is there to see you through. You do not have to be anxious about anything. What God commands, He will empower to to do. As we learn to replace anxiety with prayer and thanksgiving, God’s peace will guard us from every attack of the enemy.

Obedience to God’s Word with thankfulness will transform your life. Peace is not found in the absence of trouble but in the presence of God. Gratitude keeps us anchored in that truth.

Conclusion: Living with a Thankful Perspective

As we come to the close of our message today, let’s think again of the glass of water. As we look back on our past, do we see the half-empty glass or do we see a half-full glass of God’s blessing and goodness to give thanks for. Perspective shapes our memory and our worship.

As you look at your present today, look for things to give thanks for in your half-full glass. As you look to your future, replace anxiety with thankfulness as you see your future full of God’s blessings. Replace worry with prayer and thanksgiving.

And the peace of God will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus. May God transform each of our lives through thankfulness. Let gratitude become the rhythm of your life. Let thanksgiving shape how you see God, yourself, and the world.
