Transforming Trials into Triumphs - 1 Peter 1
Pastor Dan Walker, PhD, MDiv
Introduction: Living Hope in Troubled Times
Today we begin a new message series from the book of 1 Peter, and I’ve entitled the series Living Hope in Troubled Times. How many believe that we are living in troubled times? It’s as though we were a few years ago aboard a ship, sailing through calm waters, and then without warning, a furious storm descended. Covid, earthquakes, perversion, wars, open borders and so on have all contributed to the sense that the sky in our time seems dark and enormous waves are beating on our ship.
Then when it seems our ship is about to capsize, a light pierces the darkness. It comes from a lighthouse, standing immovable and shining steadily. That lighthouse is a beacon that can guide us safely through the treacherous waters to the harbor. That lighthouse that gives us hope in troubled times is Jesus Christ, the light of the world.
Today’s message is called “Transforming Trials into Triumphs.” God does not want you to be capsized by the trials of these troubled times, but He wants to help you transform the trials of your life into triumphs. He desires to strengthen you rather than see you overwhelmed by the storms you face.
Luke 8:24–26 (ESV) And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm.
Not only is Jesus like a lighthouse that guides you to a safe harbor in the midst of the storm, but Jesus is right there with you in your boat, your life, when the winds are howling. Jesus is able to rebuke the trials of your life and bring the calm of peace. Jesus wants to build your faith this morning so that you recognize you are not going through the trials of life alone.
He is right there with you and the storms and winds obey His voice. There is no need to panic, no need to be afraid, and no need to worry when you are trusting Him. Instead, we are called to trust Jesus and obey Him even when the storm feels overwhelming.
Psalm 107:28–30 (ESV) Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven.
What should we do in the midst of troubled times, in the midst of the storm? We should cry out to the Lord for help, because He alone has the power to make the storm be still. Through the Lord’s power, the storms of life can be triumphed over and turned into testimonies of His faithfulness.
When the storm is defeated, the Lord will bring you to your desired destination. Look for the lighthouse in the midst of the storms of life, even if for a time it is obscured by clouds or angry waves. Let its light guide you to God’s destination for your life.
You Are Chosen and Set Apart
1 Peter 1:1–2 (ESV) Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles … according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
The book of 1 Peter was written by Peter the apostle, one of the twelve, and his letter was written to the elect exiles. Every believer, including you and me, is elect, chosen by God to be His children, and we are exiles who are living as strangers in a foreign land. This world is not our home, because our true home is the kingdom of God, which has not yet come in its fullness.
Peter then speaks of the work of each member of the Trinity in our salvation. The Father knew us before we were even born and had a plan for our lives, and the Spirit sets us apart from the world to carry out that plan. The purpose of being chosen by God is to live in obedience to Jesus Christ and to be forgiven of our sins by the blood of Jesus.
In these short verses, we see that all three members of the Trinity—Father, Son, and Spirit—are essential and active in the salvation of each person. Our salvation is not accidental or incomplete, but the result of God’s intentional and loving work. Grace and peace flow out of this reality and are multiplied in our lives as we walk with Him.
1 Peter 1:3 (ESV) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Although we did not desire it or initiate it, God in His mercy caused us to be born again. We were born physically in the flesh and then born again spiritually when we believed in Jesus. As born-again people, we now have a living hope, a hope that will never die or fade away.
That hope comes through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Jesus’ resurrection gives us a firm and living hope that we have eternal life. It also assures us that we too will be raised from the dead one day.
1 Peter 1:4–5 (ESV) to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
As children of God, we have an incredible inheritance that awaits us in the future. That inheritance is completely secure, kept safe in heaven for us by God Himself. It cannot be lost, cannot fade, and cannot be defiled or perish in any way.
What about us now, while we are still living on this earth and not yet in heaven? We are guarded by God’s power throughout our lives, but this protection is not automatic. The condition to be guarded by God’s power is that we must have faith, trusting Him day by day.
Living Out Your Identity in Troubled Times
When you are surrounded by troubled times and find yourself in the midst of trials, you must know who you are. You are an elect person, chosen by God before the world was created, and you are an exile in this world waiting for your true home. You are set apart by the Spirit, forgiven by the blood of Jesus, and created to live in obedience to Jesus Christ.
You have been born again into God’s kingdom, and the old you is now dead and gone. You have a living hope and an inheritance that is waiting for you in eternity. In this life, God guards you by His power as you put your faith in Him, and the fullness of your salvation will be revealed when Jesus returns.
I would encourage you to go through these verses and personalize them this week. Say out loud that you are an elect person chosen by God before the creation of the world, and that you have been born again to a living hope. As you do this, you can drive away every negative thought, every worry, and every anxiety by believing that what God’s Word says about you is true.
The Purpose and Joy of Life’s Trials
1 Peter 1:6 (ESV) In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
What are we to do when we face trials in this world? We are called to rejoice, not in the trials themselves, but in the protection and purpose of God. A little while refers to our entire lifespan, which is very brief when viewed in the light of eternity.
During our lives on earth, we will be grieved by various trials that we encounter. Even though they are difficult and painful, we can and should rejoice. We rejoice because we know that God is at work even in the midst of suffering.
1 Peter 1:7 (ESV) so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
The purpose of trials in our lives is to test and strengthen us. Trials test the genuineness of our faith, revealing whether it will stand firm or fall apart under pressure. In the same way that gold is refined by fire, God refines our lives through the fire of trials.
When we pass the test of a trial, it will result in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus returns. Each person will receive either the reward for following Jesus or the consequence of rejecting Him. Our trials therefore have eternal significance and lasting value.
1 Peter 1:8–9 (ESV) Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
None of us, nor the people Peter was writing to, had seen Jesus in the flesh. Yet believers love Him, believe in Him, and trust that He is alive and active today. This faith produces a joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, even in the midst of trials.
Faith that stands the test of life’s trials has a wonderful outcome. The reward of faith is the salvation of our souls, which belongs only to those who believe and continue believing. This is the true purpose and joy of life’s trials.
Learning to Rejoice Through Trials
Each of us must learn to see trials as opportunities to grow in our faith. Trials should be viewed as opportunities to rejoice and praise God, even when that response does not come naturally. God’s purpose in every trial is not to hurt or destroy you, but to strengthen you and deepen your joy in Him.
This change in mindset does not come easily, because our natural tendency is to grumble and complain. Many people become depressed in trials, and some even lose all hope. Satan seeks to use trials to destroy lives, but God allows them to strengthen and refine us.
How Your Struggles Unfold God’s Plan
1 Peter 1:10 (ESV) Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully,
If you are a believer today, the salvation you have entered into was prophesied thousands of years ago. You and I are part of God’s eternal plan for humanity and the universe. The prophets did not have the full picture that we now have after the coming of Jesus and the completion of Scripture.
1 Peter 1:11 (ESV) inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.
The prophets understood that the Messiah would suffer and then enter into glory, but they did not know the exact timing or details. We have the advantage of looking back and seeing how Jesus Christ fulfilled those prophecies. His suffering, death, resurrection, and future return are all part of God’s redemptive plan.
1 Peter 1:12 (ESV) It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
New Testament believers, including us today, are the fulfillment of those ancient prophecies. We came to know Jesus through those who preached the good news in the power of the Holy Spirit. Even angels are fascinated by God’s plan of salvation for humanity.
Walking Together in God’s Eternal Plan
We must understand that we are not alone as we follow Jesus Christ. As believers, we are all part of God’s magnificent plan that was established before the creation of the world. You are part of God’s plan to create an eternal family who will one day live with Him in a new heavens and a new earth.
In this life, you are part of the family of God on this earth right now. God calls us to be part of a local church family where we strengthen and bless one another. We are meant to gather not only on Sundays, but also throughout the week in smaller groups for prayer, study, and encouragement.
Conclusion: From Storms to Safe Harbor
As we draw to a close, think again about the ship we pictured at the beginning, navigating a stormy sea. Now picture that same ship safely anchored in a peaceful harbor, with the storm behind it. The lighthouse that guided the ship continues to shine its light into the darkness.
The trials of the storm have been transformed into a triumph of hope and praise to God. Whatever you are going through today, you have a guiding light in Jesus Christ, our eternal lighthouse. If you feel lost or overwhelmed, remember that Jesus and His Word offer a path to safety and peace.
Just as the disciples cried out to Jesus in their time of need, you can call out to Him and trust Him to lead you to calm waters. May each of us reach out to Jesus and see Him transform the trials of life into triumphs of His grace.
